‘Out of the Box’ investigates the value of using archives to enhance the student learning experience in Creative Writing. The project runs from January to July 2011 and is internally funded by a Learning and Teaching Enhancement Award at University College Falmouth. The project works with screenwriting students from BA (Hons) English with Creative Writing at UCF, in partnership with the Archives and Special Collections Service at UCF and University of Exeter Cornwall Campus, and Cornwall Record Office to investigate the enhanced use of archives in creative and pedagogically powerful modes.

The project aims to:

  • Assess the value of using archives to stimulate and inspire learning in Creative Writing
  • Influence developments in pedagogy and practice in Creative Writing and the archive sector
  • Use archives to enhance students’ understanding of the writing process
  • Broaden the range of opportunities for students to generate creative work
  • Develop students’ transferable core, team working, and career management skills
  • Equip teaching staff in Creative Writing with the expertise to use archives to enhance individual practice
  • Enhance curriculum development and encourage knowledge transfer through partnerships between the Department of Writing and University/Local Authority archives
